What sub base depth for a driveway?
For a domestic driveway carrying cars, allow around 150mm of well compacted MOT Type 1 over a sound subgrade. Increase towards 200mm or more for heavier vehicles or soft ground.
A driveway carries more load than a patio, so the sub base needs to be deeper. For cars and light vehicles, around 150mm of compacted MOT Type 1 hardcore over a firm, well prepared subgrade is a common specification.
On soft or clay ground, or where vans and heavier vehicles will cross, increase the sub base towards 200mm or more and compact it in layers. Above it sits your laying course and the surface.
