What depth of sub base do I need for a patio?
For a domestic patio, a compacted MOT Type 1 sub base of 100mm is typical, over a well prepared subgrade, with 100mm to 150mm on soft ground or where light vehicles may cross.
A patio needs a stable, well drained base so the paving does not settle or crack. For general domestic foot traffic the usual build up is around 100mm of compacted MOT Type 1 hardcore, laid and compacted in layers over a firm subgrade.
On soft or clay ground, or anywhere a car might occasionally cross, increase the sub base towards 150mm and compact thoroughly. Above the sub base you then have your laying course and the paving itself, so allow for the full build up when setting levels against the damp proof course.
