How many decking screws per square metre?

Allow roughly 18 to 20 decking screws per square metre, based on two screws at every joist crossing with joists at 400mm centres. Buy a little over for waste.

Decking is normally fixed with two screws where each board crosses each joist. With joists at 400mm centres and boards around 144mm wide, that works out at roughly 18 to 20 screws per square metre of deck.

Closer joist spacing for angled or heavy duty decking increases the count, so scale up accordingly and always round up when buying.

Otis works the fixing count out from the deck size and joist spacing, adds the boards and joists, checks stock and prices it all for the account.
