How deep should a fence post be set?
A general rule is to set a fence post at least a quarter to a third of its above ground height into the ground. For a 1.8m high fence, that means a hole around 600mm deep.
A sound rule of thumb is to bury at least a quarter to a third of the post height. For a typical 1.8 metre high fence, that means posts set around 600mm into the ground, in a hole roughly 300mm across, filled with concrete or post mix.
Taller or exposed fences need deeper, wider holes to resist wind load, and soft ground calls for more depth again. Always allow for the post length to include this buried section.
Otis sizes the posts and the post mix from the fence height and run, checks stock and prices the posts, mix and panels together for the account.
