How much topsoil do I need?

Topsoil is sold by volume. At 100mm deep you need about 0.1 cubic metres per square metre, which is roughly 150kg, so a bulk bag of around 0.7 cubic metres covers about 7 square metres at that depth.

Work out topsoil by multiplying the area by the depth. At a common 100mm depth, each square metre needs 0.1 cubic metres of soil. A typical bulk bag holds around 0.7 to 0.8 cubic metres, so it covers roughly 7 to 8 square metres at 100mm deep.

For turf a 100mm to 150mm bed is usual, while deeper beds for planting need more, so scale the volume with the depth.

Otis converts the area and depth into cubic metres and bulk bags, checks availability and prices the topsoil for the account.
