How the numbers work
Turf is sold roll by roll, each covering about a square metre, so the turf figure is the area plus a small allowance for shaping and cuts. Topsoil is worked out from the area and the depth you are laying, then converted to tonnes and bulk bags.
A common topsoil depth for a new lawn is 100 to 150mm over prepared ground.
