How many decking boards per square metre?

For standard 144mm wide boards with a small gap you need about 6.5 linear metres of board per square metre of deck. That is roughly 1.8 boards per square metre for a 3.6m board.

Most softwood decking boards are around 144mm wide. Laid with a typical 5mm to 6mm expansion gap, one board covers about 150mm across, so you need roughly 6.5 linear metres of board to cover a square metre of deck.

Convert that to whole boards by dividing by the board length, then add around 10 percent for cuts, joints and waste. Remember to allow for joists at the correct spacing underneath.

Otis takes the deck dimensions and board size, works out boards, joists and fixings, checks stock and prices the whole deck for the account.
