What U value do I need for a cavity wall?

Target U values are set by Building Regulations and vary by project and whether it is new build or a renovation. New external walls commonly target around 0.18 W per square metre kelvin, but always design to the current requirement.

The U value measures how much heat passes through the wall, and lower is better. Building Regulations set the target, which differs between new build, extensions and renovations, and changes as the regulations are updated.

As a current guide, new external walls are often designed to around 0.18 watts per square metre kelvin, achieved through the right combination of blockwork, cavity insulation and finishes. The exact figure and build up must follow the regulations in force for the project.

Otis helps a customer pick insulation that suits their target build up, works out quantities and prices the materials for the account, while directing them to the current standard.

General guidance for the trade. Always follow current Building Regulations, manufacturer instructions and the specifics of the job.
