Cost of IT downtime calculator
When systems go down, the cost is more than the fix. Enter your numbers and see what an hour, and a year, of downtime is really costing you.
Downtime bites twice
When the systems stop, your people cannot work and your customers cannot buy. Both cost money, and both add up fast.
Idle staff
Every person who cannot do their job during an outage is paid to wait. Multiply that across a team.
Lost sales
If customers cannot order or pay while you are down, that revenue is often gone, not just delayed.
A case for resilience
Knowing the real cost makes the case for better systems, backups and automation that keeps you running.
Work out your downtime cost
Enter the people affected, their cost, any lost sales, and how much downtime you see a year.
a year, the estimated cost of downtime
Resilient, well integrated systems and sensible automation cut both the frequency and the sting of downtime.
Indicative estimate based on the figures you enter. Real costs vary with the time of day and how critical the systems are.
How the numbers work
The calculator adds the cost of idle staff, your people multiplied by their hourly cost, to the sales lost each hour you are down. That gives a cost per hour, which it multiplies by the hours of downtime you see in a year.
It is a guide, but it usually makes clear that even a few hours of downtime a year is worth spending to avoid.
Common questions
What counts as downtime?
Any period where the systems people rely on are unavailable, from a full outage to a slowdown that stops normal work.
How do I estimate lost sales?
Take a typical hour of revenue for the parts of the business that stop when systems are down. If nothing sells during an outage, that is your figure.
How can I reduce downtime?
Reliable backups, well integrated systems and automation that does not depend on one fragile step all help. We can review where your risks sit.
Is this exact?
No, it is an indicative guide. The cost of downtime is higher at busy times and for customer facing systems.
