How the numbers work
The calculator divides the loft area by the coverage of one board, adds a wastage allowance and rounds up. It estimates raised loft legs, which keep the boards above the insulation so you do not squash it, at about four per square metre.
Screws are estimated from the board count. If you are boarding straight onto joists rather than raising the floor, you will not need the legs.

How many loft boards do I need?
Divide the loft area by the coverage of one board and add a little for cuts. This tool does it for common board sizes.
Why do I need loft legs?
If you have thick insulation, raised legs lift the boards above it so the insulation still works. Boarding straight on top squashes it.
What size are loft boards?
Common sizes are small 1220 by 320mm panels and larger 2400 by 600mm boards. Choose yours in the tool.
Should I add wastage?
Yes, 10 percent covers cuts around the hatch, water tank and awkward corners.
