What is the right concrete mix ratio?

A common general purpose concrete mix is 1 part cement to 2 parts sharp sand to 4 parts gravel, or 1 to 5 using all in ballast. For foundations a stronger 1 to 3 to 6 is often used.

For most general work a mix of 1 part cement to 2 parts sharp sand to 4 parts coarse aggregate works well. If you are using all in ballast, which already blends sand and gravel, a ratio of 1 part cement to 5 parts ballast gives a similar result.

For foundations and heavier duty slabs a leaner structural mix such as 1 to 3 to 6 is common, while a strong mix for posts and thin sections moves towards 1 to 3. Always match the mix to the job and the specification.

Otis converts a slab or footing into cubic metres, works out the cement, sand and ballast for the chosen mix, checks stock and prices the materials for the account.
