How much sand for block paving?

Block paving uses a laying course of sharp sand around 50mm deep, roughly 0.05 cubic metres per square metre, plus kiln dried sand brushed into the joints once laid.

Block paving is laid on a screeded bed of sharp sand about 50mm thick over a compacted sub base. That works out at roughly 0.05 cubic metres, or around 75 to 90kg, of sharp sand per square metre.

Once the blocks are down and compacted, kiln dried sand is brushed into the joints to lock them together, so allow for that separately. The sub base sits below the sand bed and carries the load.

Otis converts the area into sharp sand, kiln dried sand and sub base, along with the blocks and any edging, and prices it all for the account.
