What sand and cement mix for pointing?

A typical pointing and bricklaying mortar is 1 part cement to 4 parts building sand, often with a plasticiser. For softer or older brickwork a 1 to 5 or 6 mix with lime is gentler.

For general pointing and bricklaying a mortar of 1 part cement to 4 parts soft building sand is a reliable working mix, usually with a plasticiser to improve workability. For exposed or high strength work you can move towards 1 to 3.

On older or softer masonry a weaker, more breathable mix is kinder to the brick, so 1 part cement to 5 or 6 parts sand, or a lime based mortar, is often preferred to avoid trapping moisture.

Otis works out how much mortar a job needs, converts that to bags of cement and sand, checks availability and prices them together for the account.
